Greece: Space Summer School 2016

During an intensive five-day training course in Greece, 22 teachers of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects at schools learned how to integrate space-related topics into their curricula by using inquiry-based pedagogies.

Those teachers improved their ICT skills by using tools designed for science classrooms, learned how to promote diversity and gender balance in STEM education and gained knowledge on space-related career possibilities. Moreover, the teachers tested the Space Awareness Career Hub, Citizen Science Activities, and the soon-to-come Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs). The latter will be launched on 5 September 2016 at the EUN Academy. Using all the materials and knowledge gained during this summer school, the teachers had to build and develop their own activities which can be later introduced in their lessons.

The summer school, organised by the Space Awareness project within the framework of the Inspiring Science Education Academy, gave the teachers inspiration and ideas on how they can motivate students to pursue space-related careers. In addition to hard work on skills improvement, the teachers celebrated the outstanding event – Juno’s arrival in orbit around Jupiter – by attending the public lecture “Jupiter and its Icy Moons”.
