In this session, Dr. Frank Danesy will address key questions related to careers in space: What academic disciplines are needed in the space sector? What job trends and career opportunities are there in the space domain? What does it take to become an astronaut? How does the space sector deal with diversity? What can secondary school students do to prepare themselves for careers in space? What can teachers do to support the interests of young people with respect to space careers?

The webinar will be held by Frank Danesy. He was born in Toronto and grew up in Canada, the United States and Germany. He holds master’s level credentials in business management, space science and strategic intelligence. He also holds a doctorate in economics. Dr. Danesy joined the European Space Agency in 1991. His first appointment was in The Netherlands as Head or Recruitment and Training. He moved to the ESA’s satellite operations centre (ESOC) in 1999 as Head of the Human Resources Services. In 2005, he became Head of the Human Resources Division. In these capacities, some of his projects have included the establishment of an international pre-school and an international school as well as the 2008/2009 European Astronaut Recruitment Campaign. Dr. Danesy has meanwhile joined the Directorate of Operations where he is the controller and Senior Financial Officer. Licensed as an instrument-rated commercial pilot, Dr. Danesy is an avid aviator. In his spare time, he also enjoys playing unplugged and plugged-in guitar.
