This webinar deals with the latest developments of teaching resources in the framework of the main topics of EU Space Awareness, "Our Fragile Planet" and "Navigation through the Ages". The new materials focus on the currently most relevant topic of climate change featuring a prototype the "Climate Box" as well as the history of navigation through astronomical tools. During the webinar, you will learn the facts and scientific background those materials are built on as well as a few examples of related activities to be implemented in school. The materials are prepared as fully worked out lesson schemes that address students of secondary schools. As such, they are designed to provide concrete suggestions how to use them.
The webinar will be held by Markus Nielbock. Markus was born and grew up in Germany. He holds a PhD degree in astrophysics which he obtained in 2001 at the University Bochum. As an ESO (European Southern Observatory) fellow he worked with SEST (Swedish ESO Submillimetre Telescope) in Santiago and La Silla, Chile in 2001 – 2003. In 2003 he moved back to Germany to work first as a scientist on star formation, and three years later as a system engineer/calibration scientist for Herschel Space Telescope. Since 2015 Markus works as a scientist in the EU Space Awareness project and acts as space flight specialist at House of Astronomy located in Heidelberg, Germany. His responsibilities include the development of teaching resources, and organizing teacher trainings and student workshops.
