Today on March 8, the world celebrates International Women’s Day, themed #PressforProgress. This year’s event means to inspire communities to think, act and be gender inclusive. Project Space Girls Space Women has launched a collection of resources to promote the view of space by international women, including interviews with role models, a touring exhibition and a multimedia app.
In present day, the advancements of space sciences impact the lives of people around the world. Despite a underrepresentation of women in science, female space scientists have made important discoveries in the past, and continue to do so today. In their honour, a team of female reporters collaborated with Sipa Press to interview space science students and professionals – ladies with a passion for space. With a touring exhibition, a Space Girls Space Women app, and a captivating video, people can view space from the perspective of these Space Girls and Space Women.
International Women’s Day 2018
International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated annually with events and activities around the world by women's networks, corporations, charities, educational institutions, government bodies, political parties, the media and further communities. The IWD website provides an overview of events and resources to participate in the celebration. Sharing of best practices for IWD activities is promoted by a Best Practice Competition, where organisers can share photographs and written reports of their IWD events.
For IWD 2018, the Galileo Teacher Training Program (GTTP) organises Women in Astronomy – Talking to Teresa Lago. As a female astronomer in a time when women in science were not generally accepted, Teresa Lago overcame many challenges and eventually became founder and first director of the Centre for Astrophysics of the University of Porto. As of August, Teresa Lago will assume the position of Secretary General of the International Astronomical Union (IAU).
In honour of her efforts, a live webinar with Teresa Lago takes place at 12:00 UTC at bit.ly/pload-teresa-lago-webinar.
Join the webinar and visit the IWD website to see which events are organised near you!
